In ancient times essential oils were already popular with the Romans and Greeks.
They used essential oils in tremendous amounts for perfumes and body oils. In
900 B.C. the Persian doctor Avicenna developed a method how to extract essential
oils. At that time the healing effects of certain fragrances were discovered.
The French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefossè began to experiment with essential
oils at the beginning of the 19th century. It was he who defined the word
"Aromatherapy" as the insights of the therapy with herbal fragrances.
